Resorcinol comes in a form of colourless or slightly pinkish-grey, crystalline powder or crystals, turning red on exposure to light and air. It is easily soluble in water and in alcohol.


Resorcinol is  used in the production of resins and as an intermediate for the synthesis of pharmaceuticals and other organic compounds.


In cosmetics and medicine it is used in topical acne treatments. Resorcinol and its derivatives are also used in treatment of hidradenitis suppurativa, various deep skin cleaners and throat lozenges.

Solution S is clear and not more intensely coloured than reference solution B5 or R5 and remains so when heated in a water-bath for 5 min.

Not more than 0.05 ml of 0.1M HCl or 0.1 M NaOH is required to change the colour of the indicator.

Any yellow colour in the solution is not more intense than that in a standard prepared at the same time in the same manner using 2 ml of a 0.1 g/l solution of pyrocatechol R.
